Designed by William Fairhurst, it is a concrete multispanned toll bridge, 1.4 miles (2250 m) long, and one of the longest road bridges in Europe. It is 10 m (32') above water level. West Graving Dock, King William Dock and Earl Grey dock were infilled as part of the construction. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother opened the bridge on August 18, 1966.

The University of Abertay Dundee is one of Scotland's modern industrial universities. Founded in 1888 as the Dundee Technical Institute, it became the University of Abertay Dundee in 1994.
